Shinnston, West Virginia - William Randall Hall was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 21, 2020 while at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born December 1, 1934 to the late William Lloyd Hall and Opal Shaffer Hall.

He is survived by his sons, Karl Hall and fiance Liz Casilli of McMurray PA, and Brian Hall of Shinnston; his daughter, Lisa Hall of Huntsville AL; sister, Linda Grams of Shinnston; brother-in-law, Roger Hurst and wife MaryAnn of Nutter Fort; sisters-in-law, Debra Herndon and husband Richard of Shinnston, and Kathleen Hurst of Shinnston; several nieces and nephews; and many beloved students who considered him a father figure and mentor.

Randall was preceded in death by his wife Patricia Kay (Hurst) Hall, who passed away on April 16, 2008; and his brother, Lloyd Marvin Hall.

Randall leaves a long legacy as a musician, high school band director, music teacher, and college music professor. He began his career in 1958 as a student teacher for the Roosevelt Wilson High School band. In 1959, he became the band director for East Fairmont High school, where he built a robust band program and composed the music for the Alma Mater. Randall moved onto a college teaching position in 1964 at West Liberty college, followed by high school band director positions in Maryland and New Jersey. In 1972, he returned to Harrison County, where he was the band director for Bridgeport High School from 1972 to 1985, and for Washington Irving High School and Central Middle School until his retirement in 1988. During his 30 years as a high school band director, he had superior rated bands nearly every year. He coached 100s of students to successful selection for All State Band and various honors groups, often staying late to help them with their preparation for their auditions.

Randall's love for music and mentoring would not allow him to remain retired following his high school teaching career. He accepted part-time teaching positions in the music departments at Alderson-Broaddus College and Fairmont State University during the next fourteen years. While at Fairmont State University, he formed a sax quartet that received national recognition. He also performed with the West Virginia Public Theatre in Morgantown, and in the orchestra for Broadway musicals at Fairmont State University.

Throughout Randall's career, he has given music lessons to a large number of students at all levels, from 1958 until early 2020. He has also performed over the years with many musical groups, duos and combos. While in New Jersey in 1966 - 1972, he had the opportunity to perform in the back-up section for a number of Motown artists, including Smokey Robinson, The Temptations and The Four Tops. During this early period of his career, he performed with the Rich Lewis dance band and the Lucien Calliet Clarinet Choir. He later performed with Orlando Columbo, the JR Farley Big Band and formed a musical duo with Seth Maynard.

Randall was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shinnston, President of the Phi Mu Alpha-Sinfonia, member of the American School Band Directors Association, Phi Beta Mu National Band Masters Honorary, Distinguished Conductors of the 20th Century, Shinnston High School Alumni Hall of Fame, and the West Virginia Music Educators Hall of Fame.

Randall enjoyed traveling, hiking and keeping up with his former students. Later in life, he became a dedicated "Grandpa" to his beloved cats, Callie, Tabitha, Bozo and Snarky. He lived life to the fullest and will be terribly missed by his family, friends, former students and community.

Visitation for Randall will be held at Harmer Funeral Home in Shinnston on Thursday, July 23 and Friday, July 24; from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held graveside on Saturday, July 25 at 10:30 a.m. at the Shinnston Memorial Cemetary.
