Rhodell Idalia Harris Obituary

Rhodell Idalia Harris, 78, of Fairmont, passed away November 19, 2018. She was born March 27, 1940 in Fairmont, the daughter of the late George and Isaline Gillmore Smelley.

She was a faithful member of the Morning Star Baptist Church and was retired from Fairmont State University. Rhodell loved to travel and often attended out of town services with her church. She also loved basketball and football. In her younger years, she loved to bowl and play cards. She loved her fur babies, Bear and Ebony with all her heart.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter and caregiver, Mary Ann Johnson; one granddaughter, Sonja Murphy of Fairmont; two sisters, Thelma King of Fairmont and Mary Ann Lockley of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; five nieces, Dale Stewart of Fairmont, Angie (Al) Peterson of New Jersey, Jennifer Lockley of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Michele (Bruce) McKoy of Maryland and Sheri (Ronald) Verdonk of Seoul, Korea; one nephew, Stephan Smelley of Maryland; one sister-in-law Margaret Smelley of Maryland; her former husband, James Sylvester Harris of Florida; several other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Freddie Smelley, Sr. and Ulysses Smelley; one aunt, Clarabell Collins; four nephews, George Smedley, Freddie Smelley, Jr., John Owen Brown and Nathaniel "Puddin" Smith; one niece, Sarah Jane Turner; and one sister-in-law, Almena Smelley.

A memorial service will be held Sat. January 19, 2019 at 12:00 noon at the Morning Star Baptist Church, the Rev. Wesley Dobbs officiating. Inurnment will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens. Arrangements have been entrusted to the JG Lampkin Funeral Home.
