Pauline "Polly" Salerno Costa Obituary
Fairmont, WV - Pauline "Polly" Salerno Costa, 93, of Fairmont, WV, passed away peacefully on May 15th, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on March 25, 1932, in the close-knit community of Pine Bluff, Polly was the beloved daughter of the late Tony and Maria Rosa Salerno. She was the last surviving member of a large and loving family of 13 siblings—seven brothers: Sam, Patsy, Joe, Albert, Jimmy, Junior, and Bill; and five sisters: Antionette, Jennie, Rosie, Gay, and Mary. Virgil and Rosalie Poe, in-laws to Pauline
Polly was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 50 years, John "Jack" Costa, whose friendship, and love were the foundation of her life.
She leaves behind her two daughters: Kimberly Lacaria and husband John of Bridgeport, and Kellie Claudio of San Diego, CA. Her greatest joys were her three granddaughters: Jeovanna Comer and husband Doug of Bridgeport, Dominique Holt and husband Jonathan of Kings Mill, VA, and Jacqueline Claudio and husband Nick Marion of San Diego, CA. She was also blessed with beautiful great-grandchildren: Isla and Mila Holt, and Sara, Jake, and Costa Comer—each of whom brought her endless pride and joy.
Though not family by blood, Paul and Rosemary Oliver of Fairmont were bonus children in every meaningful sense. Their lifelong friendship with Polly brought her comfort, laughter, and loyal companionship—from sharing memories in her basement with family and friends to their steadfast presence in her later years.
Polly's heart was always full, thanks to the many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family whose stories she cherished and often shared—especially around her Sunday dinner table. "Pasta Sundays" were sacred in Polly's home. She would start her sauce early in the week, preparing to feed anyone who walked through her door. No one ever left her table hungry.
A proud member of the Salerno family, Polly learned early the value of hard work and compassion. During her years at Westinghouse where she served as a Union Stewardess, she worked "toe-to-toe on the lines" and earned the respect of her peers with her dedication and sharp wit. Her smile lit up any room, and her laugh was a gift to everyone around her.
Polly had a fiery spirit and was never afraid to speak her mind. She loved a good debate and had a way of making her point known—with passion and humor. If you earned an apology from her, you knew it meant you had her deep respect. She was strong, honest, and authentic—unapologetically herself.
To her family, she was simply "Nunny"—a title she wore with immense pride. Being Nunny meant being a caregiver, a cook, a confidante, and a guiding light. She never wanted to be fussed over, and her independence was a core part of who she was. Polly was part of a remarkable generation—one built on resilience, loyalty, and love.
Though her absence leaves a deep ache, Polly's family is grateful for the many years filled with laughter, shared meals, and treasured memories. They find peace in knowing she is now reunited with her parents, siblings, and her beloved Jack.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to her caregivers, Rhonda and Heather, and the compassionate team at Amedisys Hospice. Your kindness and care in her final days meant more than words can express.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Polly's life on Saturday, May 17th, at Domico Funeral Home from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with funeral services and processions beginning shortly after. There will be Mass at the funeral home, a Christian burial and entombment at Shinnston Memorial Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.domicofh.com.
