Maureen Kennedy Wolfe Obituary

Fairmont, WV - Maureen Kennedy Wolfe passed away peacefully at home on March 9, 2026, with her family by her side. Born November 6, 1927, she was the daughter of William Michael Kennedy and Mary Rosalee Hession Kennedy. With her brother and sisters and a large extended family, she grew up on the Kennedy Farm in Fairmont, along the streetcar line that is now Locust Avenue. She graduated from St. Peter's High School and Fairmont State College, where she met her future husband, Harry Wolfe.

Maureen is survived by children Constance Simonton and husband Kevin of Vienna, WV; Margaret Wolfe of Fairmont, WV; Richard Wolfe of Charleston, WV; James Wolfe and wife January of Charleston, WV; seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Barbara Rojas of Los Angeles, CA.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Harry G. Wolfe Jr.; her brother Richard Kennedy; sisters Mary Ann Devlin, Martha Hebblethwaite, Claire Algier, Margaret Mauney, and Nancy Kennedy.

A lifelong member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Maureen belonged to St. Therese's Circle, sang alto in the church choir for many years, and participated in the church wellness group. She was also a devoted godmother to many young people in the parish.

Maureen was known for her wit and wisdom, and her love of learning never faded. She participated in the Lifelong Learners program and the Bo-Con Book Club, was an avid reader and a gifted writer, an expert chronicler of family and community history, and the undisputed champion of all the puzzles found in the daily newspaper.

She enjoyed a wide range of activities such as bridge club, tennis, swimming, and birdwatching. A dedicated volunteer with community organizations including Meals on Wheels and the Fairmont Concert Association, Maureen also remained an active member of Fairmont State's Gamma Chi Chi Sorority alumni group. In 2022, she was named marshal of Fairmont State's Homecoming Parade.

She was employed at Fairmont State College and Hartley's Department Store, and she worked in admissions at Fairmont General Hospital for nearly 20 years. She was also a whiz at shorthand and worked for a time as a freelance stenographer.

Maureen loved traveling with her husband Harry, driving coast to coast on Route 66, exploring state and national parks, enjoying family vacations up and down the Atlantic coast, and visiting Ireland, Italy, Austria, Germany, Canada, Hawaii, and Australia. She especially treasured the annual family gatherings at Alpine Lake, where she would go for a swim well into her 90s, and the Kennedy family reunions in Canaan Valley and Fairmont.

Visitation will be open to family and friends on Saturday, April 11 beginning at 9:30 a.m. at St. Peter the Fisherman Church in Fairmont, followed by the Catholic Funeral Liturgy at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Joseph Konikattil as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Following the interment, friends and family are invited to gather for lunch and fellowship in St. Peter's Parish Hall.

Donations in Maureen's memory may be made to Marion Meals on Wheels, Inc., P.O. Box 1264, Fairmont, WV 26554.

Maureen's family wishes to thank Amedisys Hospice workers for their care and compassion, and the many friends and neighbors who provided love and support.
