Celebration of Life in Loving Memory of MRS. MARY A. ROMINO
Mary Asunta Elia Romino, 104, of Fairmont, West Virginia passed away peacefully at her home with her family at her side on Friday, October 11, 2024.
She was born May 22, 1920, in Fairmont, WV, daughter of the late Rosina and Jo-seph Elia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Joseph D. Romino, a physician and surgeon in Fairmont, who passed away on August 13, 1983.
Mary was a faithful lifelong member of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church where she served as a Past President of the Altar and Rosary Society, Chairman and founder of St. Jude's Guild, a member of the Funeral Choir, and a Past Presi-dent of St. Therese's Circle. Mary was also a former member of St. Peter's Parish Council, as well as a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.
Mary was a very loving and devoted mother and wife, grandmother and great-grandmother. She always enjoyed having her family close, especially during special occasions and holidays. She loved to cook and bake for her family and friends and loved entering the Times West Virginian Cooking Contest, where she emerged as a winner several times. She made many birthday, wedding and anniversary cakes through the years for family and friends. She also enjoyed working with her church wellness group, especially at Christmas time preparing Pita Piatas for the Feast of the Seven Fishes. Her favorite words of encouragement were 'Better 'n was" and "Do the best you can". She cared for her mother, father and sister, Lena LoFiego, and was a caregiver to her father's brother, Uncle Louis Elia, and her mother's sister, Aunt Anna Mainella.
In her younger days, she was very active in many civic projects and was always ready to participate and help with the Mother's March of Dimes, Cancer and Heart Drives to help those in need. She enjoyed dancing the night away at the Elks Club with Dr. Joe, as well as, golfing and bowling. She enjoyed sewing and was quite the seamstress.
Mary served as a Past President of the Marion County Medical Auxiliary and was a charter member of the Auxiliary to the International College of Surgeons, along with the founder, Mrs. Max Thorek, a member of the Auxiliary to the American Society of the Abdominal Surgeons.
Mary had a deep love for her church family through the years. She always enjoyed their visits when she was no longer able to attend church nor visit with them through daily Mass and their special breakfasts at the Broken Egg and McAteers.
Mary is survived by her loving children and their spouses, Beverly Ann Jezioro (husband Frank), Joseph Dominick Romino (wife Sandy), and Donna Jo Metz (husband Don), 8 grandchildren, Frank (Shayne) Jezioro, John Jezioro, Mary Jo Jezioro, Amy Romino Graupman (Jason), Stacy Romino Sauer (Aaron), Ashley Romino Johnson (Brad), Andrew Metz, Joseph Metz (Stephanie), and 14 great grandchildren, Frankie and Coltin Jezioro, Liam and Myla Cochran, McKenzie, Hunter and Sydnie Metz, Austin and Adam Graupman, Parker, Blake and Brady Johnson, and Madeline and Emma Sauer. She is also survived by her youngest sister, Frances Elia Spencer of Galion, Ohio and many nieces and nephews who loved to visit and keep close tabs on Aunt Mary, as well as many close friends.
She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Christie Dawn Romino on January 7, 2021, a brother and sister-in-law Louis Elia (Maggie) of Staunton, VA and a sister and brother-in-law, Lena Elia LoFiego (Tony) of Fairmont, WV and Brother-in-law, Bernard "Jeep" Spencer of Galion, Ohio.
The family would like to thank all of those who have been there for her, showing their love and support through the years, especially the past few years that were more difficult for her to leave her home. She appreciated your continued thoughts and prayers, calls, cards and visits more than you know. Father Joe, Mary Jo Roman, Sister Mary, Sister Reeta, and Deacon David, your special visits always brought the church and all of the beautiful memories back to her.
Many thanks to her primary physician, Dr. Richard Vasicek, and her caregivers through the years and a special thank you to Linda Thompson, Melissa Peele, and Michelle Perkey for all of the loving care that was given.
William Wordsworth said it best....
What though the radiance which was once so bright
Be now forever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the Flower?
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind.
