Fairmont, WV - Heaven was truly rejoicing upon the arrival of Mary Jo Carni DeVito on February 4, 2026. The first person to meet her with a sloppy kiss was her husband Big Ed or Edward Love as she always called him.
Mary Jo was born February 28, 1931¸the second child and oldest daughter of Nicola and Barbara Carni. She made lifelong friends while at East Fairmont High School where she was a cheerleader and Dad played basketball. She was voted Miss Popularity her senior year and wore her blue and gold proudly at her grandchildren's events. In 1947 she started dating Eddie DeVito and on December 10, 1949, she became Mary Jo DeVito. They would have celebrated their 73th wedding anniversary in December 2022 and most likely "My Happiness" by Connie Francis would have been playing in the house.
Mary Jo is survived by her daughter Cathie and her husband David Metheny, son Eddie J and his wife Rusty, daughter in law Cathe DeVito of Virgina, grandchildren Michael DeVito of Pittsburgh PA, Anne Marie DeVito and her husband Nick Sangermano of New York City, Nicolena Alushin and her husband Cody of Pittsburgh and Anthony DeVito of Fairmont, and great grandsons Bronson Matthew Wylie, Bowie Alan Alushin and Dante Matthew Sangermano. She is also survived by her sister Barbara Lusk and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by her husband Edward DeVito who passed away October 13,2022, sons Edward Michael DeVito and Matthew Steven DeVito, her parents Nicola and Barbara Carni, her in-laws Doris Serge DeVito and Matteo DeVito , sister Julia DeVito and her three brothers Jim Carni, Joe Carni and John Carni, brothers in law Eugene and Paul DeVito, Dan Lusk, Kenny Walsh, and Tommy Kabulski, Sisters in law Madeline Walsh, Julie Kabulski, Stella DeVito and Dolly Carni.
Mary Jo or "MJ" as Big Ed called her will always be remembered for her pasta beans, potato salad and Poke cakes. She was a talented seamstress and made Cathie's first day of school clothes, Miss East Formal gown, Homecoming mini dress and numerous Halloween costumes - the best being Raggedy Ann and Andy for her and Big Ed.
The family will receive friends at Domico funeral home on Thursday, February 19 from 4 pm to 8 pm. Come and share your memories and stories. Mass of Christian Burial with be held on Friday, February 20 at 11:00 at Immaculate Conception Church in Fairmont with Father Casey Mahone presiding. A private graveyard committal service will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Mary Jo had been a resident at John Manchin's Senior Health Care since February 26, 2019 and had been loved and cared for beyond measure. The family will never be able to properly thank the entire staff for the kindness shown to her. Amedisys Hospice was a Godsend while she was still at home and continued their care for her went to live at John Manchins. Angels in our eyes.
We ask that you respect the only thing she ever said about her passing - don't wear black. Please come in colors that she can see from heaven above.
And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.
