Fairmont, WV - Lucy Cann Eates, 89, passed away peacefully at home after an extended illness on September 6, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Clarksburg, WV, one of five children born to James Cann and Antoinette Oliverio Cann. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Clarksburg and Mount Saint Joseph College in Cincinnati, OH.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Anthony D. Eates, of Fairmont, WV, and their four children: Antoinette (David Habenstreit) Eates of Silver Spring, MD; Monica (Mike) Kelly, of New Kensington, PA; Michele (Keith) Lewis, of Nampa, ID; and Anthony (Jenifer Hadley) Eates II, of South Charleston, WV. Lucy was blessed with nine grandchildren: Noah and Lily Habenstreit, Ian and Olivia Kelly, Mallory Lewis Brinkerhoff, Casey Lewis, Katie Lewis, and Rocco and Marco Eates and six great-grandchildren: Jaidyn, Olivia, London, Alexis, Ayden, and Liam. She is also survived by one sister, Regina Geso of The Villages, Florida.

Preceding Lucy in death were two of her brothers, Carmine Cann and Fr. Hilarion V. Cann of Bridgeport, WV, and one sister, Phyllis Hereford of Sarasota, FL.

Lucy's long, wonderful life was rooted in service, family and faith.

Her professional passion was social work. She retired from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources after serving for close to 30 years. She held a variety of positions ranging from Child Protective Services worker to Regional Administrator and Regional Director of Social Services. She also held social work positions at Catholic Charities and the Marion County Health Department. Lucy was appointed by then-Governor Cecil Underwood to the Board of Social Work Examiners, on which she served as an officer, spanning multiple gubernatorial administrations. For many years, she also served on the board of Stepping Stone, Inc., a residential transitional living facility for young males.

Lucy loved nothing more than being surrounded by her family - on beach vacations, at WVU Mountaineer football tailgates, at WV state parks, and around the holiday table. She was a great cook, specializing in recipes that celebrated her proud Italian heritage. She collaborated with her family to create a cookbook of treasured family recipes.

Lucy, with her husband Tony, was a longtime member of St. Anthony's Parish in Fairmont, WV, where she was active in the St. Elizabeth Guild.

Visitation will be open to friends and family on Thursday, September 11, from 1-7:00 p.m. at Ross Funeral Home, 801 Fairmont Avenue, Fairmont, WV. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony's Catholic Church on Friday, September 12, at 1:00 p.m., with Fr. Patsy Iaquinta as celebrant. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Fairmont.
