James H. Martin, Jr.
James H. Martin, Jr., 93, of Fairmont passed away Thursday, November 7, 2019 at the VA Medical Center in Clarksburg. He was born August 26, 1926 in Fairmont, son of the late James H. Martin Sr. and Edith Toothman Martin.
Jim worked for Bethlehem Mines Corporation for 35 years as a coalminer and later a supervisor and training coordinator for the division. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in WWII in the Philippine Islands. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, where he served as head usher for 20 years. He was the past president of the Greater Fairmont Toastmasters Club where he was a member since 1975. He was a member of the B.P.O.E. Elks since 1957. He was the only person to serve two non-consecutive terms as president of the Kiwanis Club of Fairmont. Jim was the Youth Administer for the local Kiwanis Club. He served 10 years at the WV Builder's Club Administrator. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was the past president of Marion County Parks and Recreation and the Barrackville Alumni Association. He was elected to Fairmont's first city council, and he was an avid photographer.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Carol Martin Vandevander and husband Lynn Vandevander of Franklin; two granddaughters, Amy Taylor and husband Devon Taylor of Berkeley Springs and Holly Pickens and husband Andrew Pickens of Fairmont; great grandson, Ethan Ralph Wallace Taylor; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Jim is preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Irene Sampias Martin; his two brothers, Thomas Jack Martin and Robert Gene Martin and wife Donna May Martin; his brother-in-law, Joseph Sampias and wife Delores Sampias; his nephew, Thomas Morgan; and his great-great nephew, Cody Morgan.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church, 1660 Mary Lou Retton Dr. Fairmont.
The family will receive friends at Ross Funeral Home, 801 Fairmont Ave. Fairmont, Monday from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The Catholic Funeral Liturgy will be Celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 1660 Mary Lou Retton Dr. Fairmont with Fr. Vincent Joseph as celebrant. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
A vigil service will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, November 11 at the funeral home.
Marion County Honor Guard will conduct full military honors at the cemetery.
