Worthington, WV - George Leroy Thompson, Jr., 78, of Worthington, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, November 8, 2025. He was born on November 16, 1946, in Annabelle, West Virginia, the son of the late George Thompson, Sr. and Margaret Grega Thompson.
George proudly served his country as a combat veteran in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he was awarded commendation medals for his bravery and sacrifice. Following his honorable discharge, he began a long and dedicated career with Ohio Bell, navigating through several corporate transitions before retiring from Verizon after more than 30 years in the telecommunications industry. Beyond his professional life, Leroy was deeply committed to his community. He found great fulfillment in mentoring young people, dedicating many years to coaching the Black Diamonds football team. His passion for youth development extended to North Marion High School, where he also coached tennis, soccer, and swimming, leaving a lasting impact on countless students.
George Leroy is survived by his devoted wife, Dianna (Saban) Thompson; his children, Tessa (Thompson) and her husband Raymond Pigott, George Thompson III and his wife Missy, Judy (Thompson) and her husband Brad Myers, and James "J.D." Thompson and his wife Ashley. He was a proud grandfather to Matthew, Sara, and Gracie Thompson, Danica Holbert, Tara and Hunter McIntyre, Dawson and Alex Myers, and a cherished great-grandfather to Dakota and Lacy Parker, Raiden Thompson, Tina Nay, Chloe McIntyre, and Michael Ash.
He is also survived by his loving sisters, Nora (Thompson) and her husband Russ Weekley, and Joyce (Thompson) and her husband Paul Grafton; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Nick and Terry Saban, along with their families; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews who will fondly remember him.
Leroy's loyal companion, Thunder—a beloved German Shepherd service dog—remains a comforting presence to the family, continuing the devotion and care he shared with George.
In addition to his parents, George Leroy was preceded in death by his dear friend and fellow Vietnam War veteran, Shockey Mayle, with whom he shared a lifelong bond forged through service and friendship.
