Bernadette Marie Harker Obituary

Bernadette Marie Harker, 90, of Farmington WV, passed away peacefully with family at her side at WVU Medicine Fairmont Medical Center on Wednesday, January 1, 2025.


She was born in Dunbar, PA, on March 6, 1934, daughter of the late Albert and Mary Bell.


Bernadette moved to Fairview, WV, at age 8, graduated from Fairview high school and Fairmont State University with a teaching degree. She taught in Norwalk, Ohio and then moved to Michigan and taught in the Avondale school system, where she was inducted into the Hall of Fame on September 15, 2023. She coached the 1972 varsity girls basketball team that consisted of 7 players. That year, Title IX, was signed. This gave equal opportunities for girls and women in sports-FairPlay. Bernadette was a huge advocate for the team and teams to come. At that time there were no districts, regionals, or state competition. The team was undefeated with a record of 9-0 and was named the Oakland A League Champs. She married Bill Harker, June 21, 1975, in Michigan, and returned to Fairview shortly after. She continued her teaching career at Fairmont Senior High School as a physical education instructor, and retired in 1994.


Bernadette is survived by her sister, Rosemary Bell Tennant of Fairview and brother Albert Bell of Morgantown.

A very special niece, Erica Moscufo and husband, Mike. A special classmate, Poochie Parker Bateman. In addition, she leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends.


In addition to her parents she was proceeded in death by her late husband Bill Harker, her brother Bob Bell, and a sister who died at birth, Gloria Jean.


Bernadette was devoted to the Catholic faith and enjoyed attending mass. She was an avid watcher of all sports and cheered on the Mountaineers.


In keeping with Bernadette's wishes, a private ceremony will be held for family members at Domico funeral home, January 18, 2025, at 9 AM, following with a Catholic Funeral Liturgy at 11 AM at Saint Peter's Catholic Church, 1304 Mill Street, Farmington, WV, with Father Binu as celebrant. Entombment will be held at a later date at Saint Mary's Peace Garden Mausoleum.


In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Bernadette to the Saint Peter's Church, 1304 Mill St., Farmington, WV, 26571, or charity of choice.


The family would like to thank John Manchins assisted living staff, for all of their care and compassion during her stay.
