William "Bill"'s Story
William (Bill) Russell Smith, 62, passed away on Friday (May 12, 2017).
He was born in Weston, on May 9, 1955, to Wilma (Taylor) and Adrian Smith.
He met the love of his life, Linda Konopko, and was married Sept. 13, 1980.
Bill served his country as a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1986 through 1997 in the 1st Calvary Infantry Division. He was involved in Operation Desert Storm and won several medals and awards. After his enlistment ended he worked for and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 2014.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed being with his family. He liked watching war movies and relaxing at the Mathews family home watching his great-grandchildren play. He was a very special man and was adored by all.
Bill is survived by daughter, Tina (William) Mathews; grandchildren, Karrie (Ceeton) Pfantz, Michael (Chelsea) Mathews, Dairrian Mathews and Christopher Hanson; great-grandchildren, Adrian and Kaedence Huffman, Ceeton (Reece) Pfantz, Jordan and Madison Mathews and Audrey Hanson; sisters, Vickie Pasquale, Diane (Dave) Smith, Becky Sopranik and Brother Larry (Diane) Smith; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilma and Adrian Smith; wife, Linda Smith; daughter, Cathy Cornell; grandson, Dustin Taylor; sister, Sandra (Susie) Valero; and brother-in-law, Ben Valero.
A viewing will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home in Fairmont, with a memorial service at noon. Military rites will be performed by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard and the U.S. Army Camp Dawson.
