Robert (Bob) Owen Hammer, son of J. Burr Hammer and Gladys D. Stern, passed away midmorning in his home with family by his side on Nov. 2, 2016. Bob died of complications associated with heart disease.
In his final weeks, Bob was tended closely with love and care from his family.
He lived for the past 18 months close to his surviving family in California, although he called Fairmont his home.
His final year and a half was filled with the life of family surrounding and supporting him. He is missed dearly. Bob was 89.
Bob is survived by his only living son, Paul Hammer, and grandsons, Steve Hammer, David Hammer and Richard Hammer and their families, all living in or near the Sacramento, California, area.
Born and raised in Fairmont, Bob returned to Fairmont following his two retirements from federal government service, the U.S. Navy and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Bob joined the Navy at 15 years old during WWII and remained in service through the Korean and Vietnam wars as an aviation radioman. Still a young man after 20 years and retirement from the military, Bob started another career with the FAA and retired after another 20 years.
Bob was a man of service and dedicated many years as a volunteer to the American Cancer Society, having started the chapter in West Virginia and raised over a million dollars during his service. His volunteer service was invaluable to the American Cancer Society.
Bob also served for over 30 years as a Kiwanis member and served as the Kiwanis West Virgina governor in 2006. Bob maintained his membership with the Fairmont Kiwanis club after moving out to California for the final 18 months of his life, while also joining and being active in the Sacramento-West Kiwanis club. Bob was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus both in Fairmont and Sacramento.
Bob had several dear friends in and around Fairmont who meant the world to him and wanted to be sure they knew he loved and appreciated each of them for their years of friendship.
We give love and gratitude to Bob for his time with us. He is a cherished soul.
