Ray Stewart Adkins Sr., 85, of Fairmont, died Tuesday (Jan. 10, 2017) at his residence.
He was born Aug. 17, 1931, in Macon, Georgia, a son of the late Ernest Lloyd Adkins and Josie Katherine Mooney Adkins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Ann Bennett Adkins, in 2011.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Charlotte Adkins Jr. of Webster Springs; two daughters Teresa Adkins and Carrie Adkins both of Charlotte, North Carolina; a stepson and his wife. Timothy and Judy Maple Sr. of Fairmont; a stepdaughter and her husband, Kathy and Johnny Morrison of Parkersburg; eight grandchildren, including his caretaker, Tammy Jo Carr of Fairmont; several great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Susan Maple of Fairmont.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest Adkins Jr. and Ralph Adkins, and two stepsons, Robert Maple and Ronald Maple.
Mr. Adkins was retired from the U.S. Navy with 20 years of service having been stationed in Japan. Ray served during World War II.
He also was a former postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service. Ray was a Protestant by faith, loved being with family and friends and enjoyed golf.
The family will receive friends from 3-8 p.m. today and from 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home with Evangelist Stan Jenkins officiating. The committal service will follow in the Grandview Memorial Gardens.
