Prentis "Sarge"'s Story
Prentis "Sarge" Burley Jenkins, 81, of Rivesville, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday (Sept. 8, 2016) at Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Clarksburg.
He was born in the Hammond Community near Fairmont on April 14, 1935, a son of the late Charles Arthur Jenkins and Edith Kathleen (Neel) Jenkins.
He graduated from Philip Barbour High School in 1953. He joined the U.S. Army, serving in Korea. While stationed in Germany, he met and married Hannelore Elsa (Kessler) Jenkins in October of 1964.
He retired from King Knob Coal Co. as a mechanic. Even after retirement he worked as a mechanic for Mountaineer Contracting and Arrow Concrete. Prentis was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was a member of Rivesville Free Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of 51 years, he is survived by two children, Nancy A. McElroy of Fairmont and David D. Jenkins of Rivesville; and two grandchildren, Matthew D. McElroy and Miranda D. Jenkins.
He is also survived by his sister and her husband, Shirley and Darl Fridley of Philippi.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Willis C. Jenkins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in Prentis' name to the Soup Opera, 425 Quincy St., Fairmont, WV 26554.
Friends and family may call from 1-8 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont. Funeral service will be held at noon Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Adam Stuck officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard.
