Paul's Story

Paul Joseph Pitrolo, 76, of Fairmont, passed away Friday afternoon (Aug. 4, 2017) at United Hospital Center in Bridgeport. He was born in Fairmont on Nov. 18, 1940, son of the late Paul F. and Mary Myra Tunder Pitrolo.
Paul was the former owner of Pitrolo Pontiac Cadillac in Fairmont, and was also a sales manager for Metropolitan and Combined Insurance companies. He graduated from St. Peters High School, Fairmont State College, General Motors Institute and also attended West Virginia University. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, where he earned his wings as a pilot and attained the rank of lieutenant.
He was a former member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church where he was in the Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and Fairmont Rotary Club.
Paul loved antique cars, airplanes and enjoyed gardening, grilling, hunting, fishing and visiting with his children and grandchildren. He had many lifelong friends he kept in touch with over the years.
He is survived by the mother of his children Janice Kay Smith Pitrolo of Fairmont; three sons, Paul Joseph Pitrolo of Morgantown, John Michael and wife Melanie Pitrolo of Asheville, North Carolina and Jeffrey Neal Pitrolo of Fairmont; and two grandchildren Ben and Elisabeth Pitrolo of Asheville, North Carolina. He is also survived by his sister Kathleen Pitrolo Shoemaker of Tamarac, Florida; nephew, Keith Shoemaker of Tamarac, Florida; and niece Dr. Melinda (Ken) Shoemaker Szokola of Boca Raton, Florida.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his nephew, Kevan Shoemaker.
Paul resided at the West Virginia Veterans Nursing Facility for the last five years where he made many friends and was beloved by the staff and residents. The family is eternally grateful for the wonderful care and attention he received at the VA and all of his many doctors and caretakers.
Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at Ross Funeral Home 801 Fairmont Avenue, Fairmont. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church with Fr. Shaji Thomas as celebrant. Interment will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens.
A vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Marion County Honor guard will conduct full military honors at the cemetery.
