In the afternoon of May 21, 2016, Mary Elizabeth Dittrich passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family at Novant Health Prince William Medical Center in Manassas, Virginia. She was 89 years old and had been residing at Brookdale Senior Living.
Mary was born April 22, 1927, in Fairmont. She was the daughter of Chester Berry and Maud Shaw Berry.
Mary graduated from Fairmont Senior High School in 1945 and moved to Washington, D.C., in 1946 to work for the U.S. government. She later worked as a bookkeeper in retail until retirement.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Erich Hubert Dittrich; her parents, Chester and Maud Berry; her sisters, Anna Lee Berry and Willa Shaw Berry; brothers, Wesley Berry, Bert Berry and Harry Berry; and her first husband, Gordon Speed.
She is survived by her brother, Tom Berry of Barberton, Ohio; her two daughters, Linda Kettner and husband Fred and Carol Speed; her two stepsons, Eric F. Dittrich and wife Judy and William R. Dittrich; five grandchildren, Fred Kettner and wife Julie, Michele Daniels and husband Steve, Cara Abbott and husband Mike and Eric F. Dittrich Jr., Christopher Dittrich and wife Rebecca; and 10 great-grandchildren, Lilly, Lucie and Hallie Jean Kettner, Amber and Ashley Daniels, Kevin Carroll, Logan and Lucas Abbott, and Landon and Lennox Dittrich.
A visitation will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery.
