Marta (Polena) Polanka, 78, of Halleck Road, passed away Sunday (April 23, 2017) at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
She was born in Velky Bor, Czechoslovakia, on July 27, 1938, the daughter of the late Josef Polena and Ana (Hlavacova) Polena.
Marta was married to her beloved husband, Karel Polanka, on Dec. 27, 1956. She was a professional chef in her country before coming to West Virginia to live. She came from Czechoslovakia in 1968 with her husband, daughter and sister. They became naturalized citizens in the U.S. in 1975. She was a hard worker, loving the work of gardening, flowers, yard work, canning, keeping up a beautiful home, baking, cooking, bee keeping and enjoying her family. Marta worked for G.C. Murphy, A&P Labeling Plant, Westinghouse and retired from Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc. of Morgantown with 23 years of service.
She is survived by one daughter, Marta Polanka Masters and her husband Steven of Kent, Washington; her two grandchildren, Christopher Masters of Washington, D.C., and Kira Masters of Uncasville, Connecticut.
In addition to her parents, Marta was preceded in death by her two sisters, Jarmila Friscova and Jirina Pruchova.
Special thanks and appreciation from her husband, daughter and son-in-law, and to the doctors, nurses and staff of Ruby Memorial Hospital as well as the Cancer Center, for the wonderful care given to Marta through her long battle with cancer.
Friends and family will be received from 1-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, Fairmont. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Rex Musgrove officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery.
