Julia Osco Shaw, 96, of Monongah, died Wednesday (Sept. 6, 2017) peacefully under the care of Hospice and in the presence of her loving daughter, Alice G. Shaw, at Fazio Elder Care of Fairmont.
Born Nov. 18, 1920, Julia was the youngest daughter of the late Sulo Osco and Maria (Mary) Pavlich at the family homestead in Monongah. Julia was an enthusiastic student at Monongah High School and excelled in Latin language studies at Fairmont State Teachers College. This would guide she and her family toward a long legacy of academic achievements. Julia married George Shaw of Fairmont, who worked in the family construction business.
Julia taught Latin many years at Fairmont West High School, having encouraged many students toward the medical and health professions. Julia, while daughters were in college, shared her love of learning with students at Fairmont Senior High School and East Fairmont High School. Upon age 85, Julia finally retired and received a well-honored celebration for her tenured years teaching young people.
In 2007, Julia moved with Alice to Richmond, Virginia, where she took on a new role as a greeter and comforter to the patients at the Ellen Shaw de Paredes Women's Imaging Institute.
In addition to her parents, Julia was preceded in death by her husband, George Shaw, and her daughter, Dr. Ellen Shaw de Paredes.
Surviving members include her daughter, Alice G. Shaw of Monongah, and Julia's son-in-law, Dr. Victor M. Paredes, MD of Richmond, Virginia.
Family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Ave., Fairmont. Family and friends who wish to attend a graveside service may meet at the funeral home at 12:30 p.m. Monday to proceed to Woodlawn Cemetery for a 1 p.m. service with Pastor Dan Meadows officiating.
