Howard J. Hinebaugh, 90, of Bridgeport, formerly of Shinnston, passed away Monday (Feb. 21, 2017) at the United Hospital Center in Bridgeport.
He was born Jan. 27, 1927, in Crellin, Maryland, to the late Katherine Hinebaugh and Linsey Friend.
Howard is survived by his six children, Tarla Alkire and Barry; their children, Christy Kupfer and Michael Alkire; Timothy Hinebaugh and his children Danielle Jeter, Mindy Efaw and Eric Hinebaugh; Gail Huff and the Late Robert Huff and their children, Angela Roscoe, Robbie and Angie Huff; Lyle Hinebaugh; Melissa Harbert and Jeff; Jamie Hinebaugh and Jerri and their daughter Chloe; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Howard served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was retired from the Robinson Run Mine No. 95 after 42 years as a coal miner. Howard was a member of the UMWA Local 1501, a member of the American Legion Post 31 of Shinnston, Shinnston Moose Lodge No. 929 and the VFW Post 7048. Howard served the tri-state area as "Santa Claus" for more than 50 years.
One of his greatest joys was being with his family and driving the countryside.
Friends will be received from 1:30-8 p.m. Sunday at the Harmer Funeral Home in Shinnston. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Tim Jorgensen officiating. Interment will follow at the West Virginia National Cemetery in Pruntytown.
