Helen's Story

Helen Christine (Malone) Johnson, 100, of Fairmont, passed away Monday evening (Aug. 29, 2016) at Fairmont General Hospital.
She was born in Smithtown, in January 1916, to the late Allen Brooks and Pearl Ellen (DeVault) Malone.
Christine graduated from East Fairmont High School in 1933 and from Fairmont State Teachers College in 1935.
She taught school for 12 years and served as a principal for 10 years. Christine began her teaching career in Marion County at the Mudlick School for one year in 1935-36, then transferred to Mount Harmony, where she was also the principal from 1936-42. Beginning with the 1942-43 school year, she served as the principal and taught at the Hickman Run School for two years, and then served as principal at the Hoult School for an additional two years until 1946.
Christine met her future husband, Fred Merritt Johnson, in high school in 1933. They were married on Oct. 19, 1940, in Rowlesburg, by the Rev. A.S. Wolfe. After teaching and serving as principal for the 1945-46 school year at Hoult School, she shifted gears to become a full-time homemaker to raise her two children. She resumed teaching at Annabelle at Four States for seven months in the 1968-69 school year, after which she retired from teaching.
Christine has been very active in her community and served as member and president of the Beverly Homemakers Club for several years. She was also a Cub Scout den mother when her sons were active in scouting and provided invaluable support and encouragement for their extracurricular endeavors during their school years.
As a member of the Janes Memorial United Methodist Church, she has held nearly every office including chairperson of the pastoral relations for the Boothsville Charge, Sunday School superintendent, Sunday School teacher, director of Bible School, chairperson of the Administrative Council and the outreach chairperson, which involves maintaining contact with people in the community. She also has been a longtime member of the United Methodist Women's Society, for which she has served as president and vice-president.
Christine is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, James Allen and Diane (Wolfe) Johnson of Greenville, Ohio, and Gary Michael and Alden (Hatch) Johnson of Fort Mill, South Carolina; five grandchildren, Douglas James Johnson of Las Vegas, New Mexico, Meredeth Anne Johnson and Sarah Elizabeth Johnson of Columbus, Ohio, Nancy Suzanne (Johnson) Kirchhoff of San Diego, California, and Matthew David Johnson and his wife Lauren Elizabeth Patton of Asheville, North Carolina; and two great-granddaughters, Zoey Charlotte Kirchhoff and Anya Rose Kirchhoff of San Diego, California.
She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including her very special niece, Carol Sue (Johnson) Hunt and her husband, James William Hunt of Fairmont.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Fred Merritt Johnson; sister, Rose Ellen Peters; two brothers, Allen Brooks Malone Jr. and Harold Desmond Malone; and a granddaughter, Melissa Beth (Johnson) Radcliff.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Janes Memorial United Methodist Church, c/o Rev. Dr. Michael C. Richards, 379 Dean Drive, Fairmont WV 26554.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 at Janes Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Michael C. Richards officiating. Burial will be private at Mount Zion Cemetery.
