Gary Neil Hayes Sr., 77, of Monongah, passed from this life Monday (May 2, 2016) in his home surrounded by his family, under Hospice Care, after a long illness.
He was born in Fairmont, on June 19,1938, a son of the late Carney O. and Mary Allen Hayes.
Gary was a member of the Church of Christ. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he served with search and recovery as a fireman. Although he had worked at a variety of jobs in the area, his last position was as a driver for the Mountain State Auto Auction with 15 years of service. He enjoyed watching television, especially baseball, football and the news.
Mr. Hayes is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Rhonda and Reid Martin of Mannington; one nephew, Jason Martin of Milburn, Georgia; "his stepchildren," Sharon Carey of Shinnston, Marvin C. "Buckey" and Lillian Jones of Harmony Grove, Kenneth D. Jones Jr. and Rose of Barrackville, Eva Hayes of Katy, and John Paul Jones of Monongah. Eva and Kenny also served as his primary care-givers.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his companion of 41 years, Lora Belle Jones, on Oct. 20, 2015; his son, Gary N. Hayes Jr.; and his brother, Don Hayes.
Gary chose cremation as his method of disposition. A committal service will be held at the Grove Cemetery on his birth date, June 19, at 2 p.m., at which time he will receive full military honors by the Marion County Honor Guard and the U.S. Air Force.
