Betty Lee Watkins, 93, of Fairmont, passed away Tuesday (Nov. 15, 2016) at Monongalia General Hospital.
She was born March 22, 1923, in Everettville, a daughter of the late John Heller and Madge Louise (Goodwin) Davis.
Betty graduated from Farmington High School in 1941 and attended Fairmont Business College. She was employed in the accounting office at Owens-Illinois Glass Plant and in the kitchen department at Bauer Lumber Co. in Fairmont.
Mrs. Watkins was a member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church and was the pianist there for many years. She delighted many with her piano playing and her ability to play by ear.
In 1973, Betty was one of the first drivers for the newly established local location of the Meals On Wheels program. She continued to be actively involved with Meals On Wheels as assistant treasurer and East Side maintenance chairman until 2002. Mrs. Watkins was also active in the Hickman Run Extension Homemakers and as a volunteer at the Marion County Historical Society.
She is survived by her son, Richard Watkins and wife Christina, of Owasso, Oklahoma; her daughter, Brenda Watkins Musgrove and husband Rick, of Fairmont; her grandchildren, Brent Watkins and wife Stacie, of Boston, Massachusetts, and Derek Watkins of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two great-granddaughters, Abigail Marie Watkins, of Riverside, California, and Emma Rose Watkins of Boston, Massachusetts.
She is also survived by one sister, Catherine (Kitty) Michael of State College, Pennsylvania; a sister-in-law, Sarah Davis of Alabama; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Joseph Edward Watkins on Dec. 8, 2014; a sister, Edna Ruth Conaway; a brother, John H. Davis; and brothers-in-law, Calvin R. Conaway, Paul L. Michael and Ralph H. Watkins.
The family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m until 1 p.m. Friday at the Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont. The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with Pastor Jim Zinn officiating. Interment will follow at the Harmony Grove Cemetery in Taylor County.
