Betty Beryl Smith, 88, of Abilene, Texas, passed away at her home Thursday (Feb. 9, 2017).
Funeral services were Monday (Feb. 13, 2017) in the Chapel of Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street in Abilene, Texas.
Betty was born on Oct. 28, 1928, in the coal mining community of Barrackville to Tress and Pauline Sterling.
She graduated high school in Barrackville before attending beauty school in Morgantown. Betty made her way west and met Earl Smith. Betty and Earl were married in Carlsbad, New Mexico, on Jan. 16, 1959. In November 1959, Betty and Earl made their way to Abilene and never left. Betty helped Earl open and operate Frenchmens Optical. Betty also spent her time working for Timex, running the switchboard at the West Texas Medical Center, being a homemaker and helping others by offering private home health care. Betty was a longtime member of the Baker Heights Church of Christ.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Tress and Pauline Sterling; her husband Earl Smith; brothers Lantz Sterling and John Sterling; sister-in-law Ruth Ann Sterling and stepson Randy Smith.
She is survived by her sons Rodney Smith and wife Jill and Rick Smith and wife Shelley of Abilene, Texas; sister Louise Corbin of Fort Worth, Texas; grandsons Christopher Smith, Joshua Smith and wife Tiffany and Gauge Smith, all of Abilene, Texas; granddaughter Amber Smith of Abilene, Texas and great-grandchildren Christian Smith, Matthew Smith and Noah Godinez.
