William Roy Ponton, 68, of Fairmont, went to be with the Lord on May 21, 2017. His courageous battle with cancer is over and he is at peace.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he is the beloved son of the late Roy William Ponton and Gertrude L Ponton.
He is survived by his loving sisters, Sandra Layman of Fairmont, and Karen (Frank) Doran of Georgetown, Texas; granddaughter, Haley (Brian) Shuman; three great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bill proudly served his country and is a decorated U.S. Army, Vietnam War veteran. He graduated from California University of Pennsylvania and retired after 25 years as personnel director of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.
He loved the outdoors, wildlife and journaling and was an avid painter.
Bill will be laid to rest at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania. Family and friends may attend the full military gravesite service at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, 1158 Morgan Road, Bridgeville, Pennsylvania.
