William "Bill"'s Story
William "Bill" Joseph Long, 77, of Fairmont, passed away on Monday (Aug. 1, 2016) at United Hospital Center.
He was born in Marion County, on Nov. 22, 1938, a son of the late George Luther Long and Nellie (Blodgett) Long.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Charlet Cain Long.
He had worked at Sharon Steel, Martinka Mines as a coal miner and retired from Jim Walter Resources Inc. in Brookwood, Alabama. He was a proud member of the United Mine Workers of America.
William attended Fellowship Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. His best times were spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Joe Long and his wife Melissa of Fairmont and Butch Long and his wife Darlene also of Fairmont; one daughter, Della Paknik and her husband Dave of Fairmont; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two brothers, Frank Long and his wife Dottie and Buck Long and his wife Peggy; one sister, Mary Cartwright and her husband Gene; a sister-in-law, Karol Sue Fluharty Long; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by eight brothers; two sisters; and a granddaughter, Drema Long.
Friends and family may call from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with Pastor Glenn Stevenson Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery.
