Virgil's Story

Virgil Morris, 94, of Fairview, passed away Monday (June 13, 2016) at the Tygart Center at Fairmont Campus.
He was born in Banner, Kentucky, son of the late Joe and his wife Retha (Carder) Morris.
He is survived by six children, Eileen Balch and husband John, Keith Morris and wife Debbie, Diana Booth and husband Durwin, Van Morris and fiancee Cheryl, Pat Santee and husband Lenny and Dwight Morris; four siblings, Monoka Morris, Dolores Michael Wade, Ruby Tengea and husband John and Russell Morris and wife Terri; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Virgil also leaves behind several care-givers that he became very close to, including Dr. Patel, nurses, CNAs and staff at the Tygart Center at Fairmont Campus and the doctors, nurses and staff at the Fairmont Regional Medical Center.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Retha Mae (Carpenter) Morris; and five siblings, Erma Williams, Hallie Corbin, Bonnie Dennison, Joseph "Buck" Morris and Robert Morris.
Virgil was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His family was his life. He cherished them and they all loved him very much in return. He was always a hard worker and planted large gardens in his younger years.
He was a member of the Farmington Church of Christ, United Mine Workers of America and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII. During his service, he traveled many places in the world including Fort Thomas, Kentucky; Nashville, Tennessee; Memphis, Tennessee; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Los Angeles, California; the South Pacific; China; and India.
Virgil was a graduate of Monongah High School and worked for Bethlehem Steel, Eastern Associated Coal Co., Mountaineer Coal Co., Idamay, Barrackville, Rachel and Federal No. 2 Coal Mines.
Virgil chose to donate his body to the West Virginia University Human Gift Registry. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
