Thelma's Story

Thelma Aldene Modi, formerly of Mannington, passed away peacefully May 3, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, surrounded by her family.
Born Oct. 13, 1922, in Wisconsin, Thelma met her future husband - Leo Modi - at a USO dance held near Thelma's Midwest hometown. At that time, Leo was serving his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps. The couple met at that event when Leo offered a dance with Thelma in exchange for her checked coat. The two married in 1944 and shortly thereafter, moved to Pennsylvania where Leo, who was recently discharged from the service following World War II, had started his studies in dental school.
Following Leo's graduation as a DDS from the University of Pittsburgh in 1952, the couple returned to Leo's hometown in Mannington, where they began what would become a highly successful dental practice that served the Mannington community and surrounding area for over 40 years until Leo's retirement.
Thelma spent her entire life devoted to her family, her community and the Roman Catholic faith. Over the years, she was very active in the Mannington Woman's Club, enjoyed playing bridge, golf and travel. and was kind, gentle and caring to everyone she met.
Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; and leaves behind her son. Dr. Thomas Modi of Alpharetta, Georgia, his wife, Anne; and their two children, Aubrey and Andrew.
Thelma also leaves behind her daughter, Jill Marie Baron of Fredericksburg, Virginia; her husband, James; and their two children, Russell and James.
Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Sunday at Hutson Funeral Home, 500 E Main St., Mannington, with the Rosary being recited at 7 p.m. and a vigil service to follow. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 204 Furbee Ave., Mannington, Rev. Vincy Illickal as celebrant. Interment will immediately follow at Mannington Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mannington Food Pantry.
