Stanley's Story

Stanley Irven Powell, 91, of Gypsy, another link of the greatest generation ever, crossed over the sunny banks of sweet deliverance where he was met by his wife of 40 years Barbara Ann to be reunited.
He passed away on Aug. 6, 2016 at his home surrounded by family and loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Ann Powell, May 16, 1993; one brother, "Bobby" Pyles, Jan. 5, 2005; one son, Donald Powell, and daughter in-law, Loretta Powell.
Born July 3, 1925 to Ervin Moore and Violet Virginia Powell in Fairmont. He is survived by son, Clifford "Tip" Powell of Lumberport and two daughters, Virginia Starsick and husband Stanley of Rachel and Sharon and husband Paul McIntire of Enterprise. Stanley had 10 grandchildren, Joey, Cary, Heather, Cliff, Brooke, Travis, Allan, Adam, Alicia and Rachel, along with 16 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a special caregiver Mary Smith of Gypsy.
He was a well-known blacksmith and owned his own shop, Powell's Blacksmith, on East Ferry Street in Clarksburg before moving the shop to Gypsy. He traveled to many states and took pride in being able to work on any foot from a pony to a Clydesdale.
Stanley loved talking horses with his grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed going camping. He competed in horseshoe tournaments well into his 70s. He created many things while tinkering with blacksmithing, one being a 13 candle holder for the Sago Mine disaster, along with other numerous items.
Family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at Dorsey Funeral Home, 701 S. Pike Street, Shinnston. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Pastor Richard Layfield. Interment will follow at ET Vincent Cemetery.
