Shirley LaVaughn Zirkle Satterfield, 82, of Marshville, passed away Friday evening (Feb. 23, 2018) at United Hospital Center. She was born March 4, 1935 in Haywood, a daughter of the late Stanley and Nina Merle Griffin Zirkle. On June 19, 1953, she married Harry R. Satterfield, who passed away Jan. 6, 2011.
She is survived by their children, Judith Lynn "Judy" Spidel and her husband Rickey "Scott" of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Brian Keith Satterfield and his wife Susan of Salem, and Lois LaVaughn Satterfield of Clarksburg; grandchildren, Tia Mae Simon and her husband Daniel of Bowling Green, Kentucky, and Travis Max Spidel and his wife Brandy of Bowling Green, Kentucky; great-grandchildren, Luke Joseph Simon, Lauren Kate Simon, Lily Mae Simon, Lincoln Scott Simon, Molly Layne Spidel and Adelyn Grace Spidel, all of Bowling Green, Kentucky; step-grandchildren, Jennifer Post and her husband Jason, Janette Jefferson and her husband Rudy and Jackie Fetty and her husband Nick; step-great-grandchildren, Makenna Post, Justice Jefferson, Nikki Talkington, Kyra Jefferson, Cheyenne Jefferson, Ashauntae Jefferson, Lyryk Jefferson, Landon Jefferson, Ravyn Jefferson, Cameron Baxa and Madison Fetty; brothers, Rodger Zirkle and his wife Shelba of Wolf Summit; Larry Zirkle and his wife Joyce of Marshville; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her infant son, Rodney Bruce Satterfield; brother, Bill Zirkle; and sister, Dortha Lee Currey.
Shirley graduated from Shinnston High School, where she was a member of Buck Shaffer's Band. She was a retired teacher's aide having worked at VanHorn Elementary, Gore Jr. High and Harden Elementary. She was a longtime member of Marshville Baptist Church, where she had served as choir leader. She was the longest living member of Marshville CEO's having joined in 1961 and was active over 50 years, and had served as president and was currently serving as vice president. In 1999, she became active in Harrison Co. Senior Citizens which she enjoyed along with being a Harrison Co. election poll worker, both in the Marshville community. She was active in the Harrison Co. Retired Teachers Association.
Friends will be received from 4-8 p.m. today and Monday at the Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, at the Marshville Baptist Church with a viewing from 10-11 a.m. with Pastor Ron Owens and Pastor Johnmark Camenga officiating. Interment will be at Marshville Cemetery.
