Sarah Elaine (Merrill) VanGilder, 89, of Fairmont, passed away Saturday (Dec. 2, 2017) at Pleasant Acres Christian Haven.
She was born in Fairmont on Jan. 17, 1928, a daughter of the late Okey and Frances Carol (Friend) Merrill.
Sarah was a homemaker, wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She enjoyed her family, loved to read, and took pleasure in caring for her plants and flowers. She had attended the Grassy Run United Methodist Church, River Run Community Church and South Ridge Church.
She is survived by five children and their spouses, Karen Mae and Kenneth Newbrough of Vincent, Ohio, Carl F. and Sandra VanGilder, Jr. of Fairmont, Hollis C. and David Morgan of Smithfield, Virginia, Sandra E. and Lynn Malone of Fairmont and Martin O. and Linda VanGilder of Fairmont; 15 grandchildren and their spouses, Tammie and Jeff Brooks of Vincent, Ohio, Vicki and Randy Marshall of Mineral Wells, Dr. Keith and Dana Newbrough of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Carla and Chad Williams of Fairmont, Crystal and Frank Jacquez of Fairmont, Brent and Erin VanGilder of Carolina Beach, North Carolina, Craig and Amber Morgan of Windsor, Virginia, Danielle and Scott Miller, Chad and Lee Morgan of Smithfield, Virginia, Melynda Morgan of Smithfield, Virginia, Megan and Dr. Brock Oliverio of Boothsville, Melissa and Bill White of Jamestown, North Carolina, Brandon and Jennifer Malone of Fairmont, Martin J.C. and Julianne VanGilder of Fairmont and Matthew and Bethany VanGilder of Monongah; 17 great-granddaughters, Mallory Gomes and spouse, Christian of Frederick, Maryland, MacKenzie Brooks of Ohio, Haley Marshall of Mineral Wells, Samantha and Sydney Newbrough of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Brooke VanGilder of Carolina Beach, North Carolina, Carlina Jacquez, Kate and Lauren Williams of Fairmont, Helaina and Emily Miller and Miranda Upton of Smithfield, Virginia, Autumn Morgan of Windsor, Virginia, Briauna and Lillah Malone of Fairmont, Kennedy White of Jamestown, North Carolina, Liviana VanGilder of Monongah; 11 great-grandsons, Logan Marshall and spouse, Stephanie of Williamstown, Hudson Newbrough of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Harper Jacquez of Fairmont, Beau and Slade VanGilder of Carolina Beach, North Carolina, Darren Upton of Smithfield, Virginia, Colin Morgan of Windwor, Virginia, Holden White of Jamestown, North Carolina, Colby and Jace VanGilder of Fairmont and Drake VanGilder of Monongah; three great, great-grandchildren, Alexis Marshall Blavos of Mineral Wells, Hunter Marshall of Williamstown, and Emery Gomes of Frederick, Maryland; a brother, Harmon L. Merrill of Virginia Beach, Virginia; a sister-in-law, Christine VanGilder of Kentucky, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Carl F. VanGilder Sr.; a daughter, Carla Ann VanGilder who died in infancy; and three brothers, Okey Lee Merrill, Paul Wayne Merrill and Lawrence Earl Merrill; and one sister, June Hollis Wade.

Friends and family may call from 2-8 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, Fairmont. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8, 2017 at the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Earl Klein officiating. Interment services will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery.
