Text size

(Junior) Russell Swain, 91, of Garden City, Michigan, formally of Fairmont, passed away Sunday (May 6, 2018) after a brief illness. He was born July 23, 1926 in Marion County, the son of Russell and Nell (Ravenscroft) Swain.
He was a 1946 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School and played on the state championship football team. He was a proud World War II Navy veteran having served in the Marshall Islands aboard the aircraft carrier the USS Enterprise, colloquially known as "The Big E." On July 28, 1950, he married the love of his life, Martha Willett. He was a journeyman electrician and retired from Chrysler Corporation's Trenton Engine Plant, UAW Local 372.
He was preceded in death by his second wife, Linda; Martha, the mother of his children; his son, Brad; and brothers, Elsworth and Richard Swain.
He is survived by his daughter, Lynn Bannister (Stan) of Garden City, Michigan; two sisters, Juanita Duarte of Clarksburg and Barbara Fox of Fairmont; sister-in-law, Doris Swain of Berkeley Springs; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was a Shriner and Scottish Rite, 32nd Degree Mason. To those that knew him he was by no means a shrinking violet. He was exuberant and larger than life. He had a voracious appetite for reading, especially historical accounts and biographies. A lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Yankees fan, Russ also enjoyed dancing, fishing and giving people hell.
Per his wishes, cremation has taken place. At a later date, his family will scatter his remains on his beloved Monongahela River.
