Ruby's Story

Ruby Mae Carpenter Brookover, 94, of Rivesville (Hoodsville Community), passed away at the John Manchin Sr. Health Care Center on Oct. 3, 2017.
She was born in Fairmont, on May 8, 1923, the daughter of the late Geraldine Hall Carpenter Duskey and Clarence F. Carpenter and her stepfather, Guy Duskey.
She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Corliss Paul Brookover, married on April 28, 1945. They lived all of those years on their farm in Hoodsville. They enjoyed life together farming, raising Hereford cattle and their many yellow Labrador retriever friends. Her hobbies included tole painting, gardening and canning, cooking and baking, and her lifelong love of collecting and decorating with antiques. She and her husband also enjoyed camping and traveling all over the United States with their dear friends Flora Eddy, her late husband Wayne, and their children of Fairmont.
Ruby was raised and attended schools in Fairmont and Shinnston before moving to Charles Town, where she graduated from Charles Town High School.
She is also survived by her granddaughter, Jennifer Brookover Sweet; husband, Tom; and great-granddaughter, Caroline of Fort Worth, Texas. Other survivors include sister, Shirley Conaway of Parkersburg; brother, Paul Russell Duskey of Blacksville; former daughter-in-law and dear friend, Joann Brookover of Murietta, California, special sister-in-law, Carla L. Duskey of Fairmont; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and many special friends, Kepper and Rodney Martin of Hoodsville Community, Russ and Deloris Kennedy and family of Barrackville, JoJo Rakosky of McCurdysville, Ernie and Jennie Biddle of Fairmont, the Joe Urse family of Fairmont, and Kenny and Shirley Bragg and family of Hoodsville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her only son, Corliss David Brookover, who passed away on Oct. 18, 2016; sister, Geneva Duskey Hunter; and brother, Guy "Bud" Duskey Jr.
Many, many thanks to neighbors and friends who have visited and provided comfort for the past year. Special thanks to the excellent staff of West Virginia Caring for their care and guidance. Thank you to the wonderful staff at the John Manchin Sr. Health Care Center for loving and caring for her like she was one of your own.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to the West Virginia University Extension Service, 314 Monroe St., Fairmont, WV 26554 for the Marion County 4-H Project.
Friends and family may call from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the funeral home with Pastor Matt Holbert officiating. Interment will follow at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens, Westover.
