Robert's Story

Robert Lee Thompson, Jr., 92, of Chatham Hill, Farmington, passed away Saturday (May 13, 2017)?at his residence.
He was born Aug. 10, 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Gertrude Williams and raised by the late Robert Lee Thompson, Sr. and Dora Camper Thompson.
He was employed as a coal miner for Loveridge Mine, having retired after 42 years of service. He was a veteran of the of World War II, having served in the United States Navy and a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Air Force. Robert was a graduate of Dunbar High School, a proud member of the UMWA and loved to watch golf, draw, work crossword puzzles, tend to his yard work and listen to classic country music. He enjoyed a half-gallon of ice cream daily.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Carrie Mae Mason Thompson, whom he married Nov. 19, 1961; four sons, Tommy Thompson of Washington, Pennsylvania, Robert Phillips of Dallas, Texas, Charles Suggs, of Fairmont, Jeffrey (Sarah) Thompson of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania; a daughter, Carol Jean Suggs of Fairmont; sisters-in-law, Rose Mann, Betty Mason, Charlotte Sumlin, all of Fairmont; three daughters-in-law, Roxanne, Brenda and Genevieve; several grandchildren including his little buddy, Jeffrey Lynn (Jacki) Thompson, Monica (Chris) Kibbe, Princess Jean Hinton and Gregory (Ann) Hinton, II; several great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sons, Dwayne Thompson and James Suggs; a daughter-in-law, Sheila Suggs; several aunts, uncles, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
The family would like to thank Amedysis Hospice, especially Emily, Randy, Karen and Amanda for all their care.
Cremation services are entrusted to the Hutson Funeral Home in Farmington. At Mr. Thompson's request, there will be no visitation. A military graveside service will be held at a later date at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Fairmont.
