Rickey James Mazza Rickey James Mazza, 74, of Salisbury, NC, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 25th at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmy and Jennie Mazza.
He graduated in 1962 from East Fairmont High, where he was a three-sport star athlete. He attended Greenbrier Military Academy where he was named "Athlete of the Year", and then went on to graduate from West Virginia University, where he played baseball and basketball. He received his master's degree in English Literature from Carnegie Mellon.
He became a teacher and a coach where he influenced many kids lives, not only with his passion for life but with his tremendous motivational skills in the classroom and on the field.
He taught and coached in many states but his fondest memories were at Monongah High School in the early 70's. There, he was the head basketball coach and the assistant football coach with winning seasons in both sports. As a coach he demanded respect and discipline from his athletes, but he also made sports fun to participate in.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl, his sons; Shane, Chance, Rick and wife Laurie, three grandsons; Zac, Rickey, James and his wife Katie, a brother Larry Mazza and a sister Linda Shelosky.
A memorial mass will be held in Fairmont at a later date.

My deepest sympathies to Linda and Larry and their families. We all grew up around the fields and courts of EFHS. Ricky was one of the greatest athletes in the history of our great school. He was an inspiration to all of us and a great friend to the old neighborhood gang. He has and always will be a wonderful memory of our fortunate youth.

Sorry to hear about our teammate, Shirley/rosemary let me know, last year it was Jim sypult. Rick was a great player, very unselfish & excellent in all sports. We played also in the summers at the old eggs play ground. Guys like Dwight hall, Eugene pellillo, joe Clara, bill Malone, frank Lucente, chuck keener, John alleviate & others, great fun times. Rick was always ensuring he looked good during games, mr. preister would say get Rick, he was in front of the gym mirror making sure his hair & uniform were perfect. He was a class man. Also good old yellow jacket school hangout. I have a 1940 baseball picture of his dad & my dad, 1940 w. Va. State champs, only 79 yrs ago. Hello to Larry/Linda ...Mazza. Rest In Peace teammate. God bless everyone . ❤️❤️❤️Read more

My condolences to the family of Mr. Rickey
His accomplishment would not happen without you Ms. Linda and your family support. What fond memories you will always have every day. There's a scripture I want to leave you with and hope it comforts you as it has me at John 5:28,29, it's the words spoken of by Jesus

Linda and Larry, I am sorry that you've lost this special guy, in the sense of his being gone from our presence right now. I know he was an inspiration not only to his students and teams he coached, but to many others of us who saw him early on in life. I remember his play for EFHS how it inspired me clear back when I was in 7th or 8th grade to want to play for the Bees !

I trust the Lord will be with you all both at the service -- which I see Linda is 'running' - good for you ! -- and in the days to come. Who'd a' thought we'd all be in our 70s some day !
