Richard "Dick" Nichols, 83, of Fairmont, passed away early Thursday morning (April 28, 2016) in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, surrounded by his family.
He was born Aug. 28, 1932, in Fairmont, son of the late Marvel and Iva "Carpenter" Nichols. Mr. Nichols was a Methodist by faith. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1971, working in the Strategic Air Command. Later in life he was active in appliance repair. Dick was an avid West Virginia University sports fan and enjoyed his many travels. He traveled to all countries abroad.
Survivors include his wife, Joann Mullenax Howell Nichols of Fairmont (married over 48 years); a daughter, Margaret Howell Viands of Fairmont; a grandson, D.J. and his wife Michelle Viands of Coolville, Ohio; a great-grandson, Bryson Tripp Viands of Coolville, Ohio; two sisters, Judy and her husband John Shaffer of Fairmont, and Joanie Audia of Fairmont; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Francis Viands; a brother, Jack Nichols; and three sisters, Patty Nichols, Marvel Lee Fox and Carol Omdick.
Mr. Nichols has chosen cremation services. Family and friends will be greeted from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Baptist Temple Church, Morgantown Avenue, Fairmont. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday with Dr. Rev. Holly Faulkner officiating. A private burial will follow at a later time.
