Ray's Story

Ray R. Rogers, 84, of Mount Harmony Community, Fairmont, peacefully passed away Friday (June 9, 2017) at his home.
He was born in Winfield Community on July 14, 1932 the son of the late Worley and "Virgie" Virginia (Lake) Rogers.
Ray graduated from East Fairmont High School in 1950.
He was a veteran of the Korean War as a member of the United States Navy Seabees, serving from 1952-56 in active duty and then from 1956-60 as a reservist. He retired in 1995 with 30 years of service with Alcan Aluminum. In earlier years, he worked for S.M. Kisner & Sons on Speedway Avenue in Fairmont. Ray enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling and was an avid card player, especially enjoying card games with his children and grandchildren. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, and he enjoyed his home.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Viola "Vi" Rogers of Fairmont; two daughters, Cindy Merrill and her husband John of Fairmont and Crystal Gearhart and her husband Terry of Virginia Beach, Virginia; six grandchildren, Courtney Merrill, Kaitlin Merrill Robinson and her husband Josh, Ryan Merrill, Courtney Gearhart Brough and her husband Bryan, Jeff Gearhart and Cameron Gearhart; and two great-grandchildren, Connor Hedrick and Carlee Hedrick.
Also surviving is a brother, William Rogers and his wife Patti; and two brothers-in-law, JR Harsh and Rex Kisner and his wife, Aretta; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters, Marjorie Gordy and her husband Pete and Doris Harsh; and sister-in-law Sandy Garlow and her husband Charles.
Ray's family would like to thank the nurses of Amedisys and the Veterans Administration for providing home health care. Many thanks to Marilyn Gifford for her continued help and support.

Friends and family may call from 6-9 p.m. today and from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, Fairmont. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Tom Shepherd officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery. Flag folding rites will be conducted at the funeral home by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard.
