Philip Joseph Colanero

Events

Philip J. Colanero Jr., 73, went to be with our Lord and Savior on February 23, 2019. Phil, also known as "Flip" by many, was born in Monongah, West Virginia on March 5, 1945 to Philip J. Colanero Sr. and Elizabeth "Libby" Milush.

Phil contracted polio at the age of four which affected his left arm and leg. He was strong, determined, and extremely stubborn. He persevered and loved life and never let any of his limitations deter him from anything he set his mind to. He loved researching his family roots from Frosolone, Italy and he loved Monongah history.

He was an avid golfer and so many were amazed watching him play with one arm and play the game so well. He absolutely loved sports, with basketball and football being his favorite. He spent most of his life coaching basketball and football from little league teams to high school. He was WVU's biggest fan and also their biggest critic.

He was an amazing father to his two girls that he adored. He never missed a homecoming, cheer event, or even a practice once.

He loved his dogs and they were his best friends. Pepper and Mia (deceased), Max and Nikki. These dogs truly loved him more than anything and stayed by his side every minute of every day until his last breath was taken on earth.

He graduated from Fairmont State College with a Bachelors in Education. He taught and coached football many years at Notre Dame High School in Clarksburg, WV. He also worked and retired from Westinghouse as a bookkeeper.

Phil was preceded in death by his grandson Christopher W Huffman, his parents Philip Sr and Elizabeth Colanero, and grandparents Daniel and Filomena Colanero, which immigrated from Frosolone, Italy.

Philip is survived by his companion and best friend Betty Lou Hanlin. His two daughters Deanne L. Broscious and spouse (Robert Dyson) of Monongah and Melissa S Colanero Huffman and spouse (Rodney Huffman) of Monongah. His brothers and sisters, Paulette O'conner And spouse John O'connor, Tom Colanero and spouse Julie Colanero, James Colanero and spouse Debbie Colanero, Cathy Johnson and spouse Mike Johnson, Annette Davis and spouse Mark Davis. He also had many grandchildren whom called him "Pap" and that he adored. Morgan Atha, Samantha Lemley and fiance (Joseph Heckle), Cole Atha, Chaz Colanero, Chase Colanero, Manning Broscious, Iszabella Hyde, Benedicta Broscious, Cambria Broscious, Jerry Broscious and Christopher Huffman (deceased) and a great grandchild Allen Joseph. Also surviving is his step children Scott Hanlin and Daniel Hanlin (deceased) and step grandchildren Scotttie Hanlin and Christian Hanlin.

Phil is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends that knew and loved him. He was loved by many throughout his time here on earth and he will be terribly missed. We have peace that he is now rejoicing in Heaven with his mom and dad looking down upon each of his loved ones.

The family will receive friends at Ross Funeral Home 801 Fairmont Avenue Fairmont on Thursday from 4-8:00 P.M. A vigil service will be held Thursday evening with Deacon Lou Belldina officiating. The Catholic Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Friday March 1, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Monongah with Fr. Vincent Joseph as Celebrant.
