Nick J. Fonte

Nick Fonte, 94, of Fairmont, WV passed away early Thursday, March 28, 2019 at Mon General Hospital. Nick was born February 14, 1925 in Morgantown, WV, son of Nick and Mary Fonte Pasquariello.

Avid fisherman and hunter, Nick's love of nature and exuberance for life was infectious. He loved to use his creative talents to design fly rods in hopes of creating the perfect one to catch that monster steelhead trout. He shared this passion for fishing and hunting with his son Nicholas, who became his primary caregiver in his later years. Nick was an amazing artist who could easily draw from memory and used this ability in the coalmines to capture mine accidents during investigations. A skilled chef, Nick never followed a recipe, cooking everything from ribs to dill bread. He loved his sweets, often requesting his daughter, Diana, send milk chocolate pecan turtles from a special little store in Colorado. When he wasn't enjoying the West Virginia outdoors, Nick could be found on the dance floor with his wife, Susie, dancing everything from disco to the cha-cha.

In his younger years, Nick enjoyed camping in the West Virginia hills with his family, eating pepperoni rolls, teaching his children how to fish, swim in Shavers Fork, or hang from a grapevine. His favorite movies and shows kept him busy in his twilight years as he watched Andy Griffith and John Wayne and talked to his daughter's father-in-law, Bill Craig, almost daily about fishing and the good ole days. He and his wife were so proud of the family they built together. They will carry on his love for life and nature, having special conversations with anyone along the way.

He attended Farmington High School where he played football and was known by the nickname "Silver." He served in the United States Navy from 1943-1946 during World War II, participating in the European and Pacific Ocean theaters. He was a member of VFW Post 629. He worked for several coal mining companies, finishing out his mining career with 40 years at Bethlehem Mining Corporation.

He is survived by his son Nicholas Michael Fonte of Fairmont; his daughter Diana Lynn Craig and husband, Kevin, of Arvada, Colorado; two grandchildren, Catherine Fahey and her husband, Michael of Centreville, VA; Christina Hillsberg, and her husband, Ryan, of North Bend, WA; three great-grandchildren: Cedar John Nicholas Fahey, Arius Fonte Hillsberg, and Geneva Grace Hillsberg; sisters Eleanor Menas and Shirley Narog both of Fairmont, and Phyllis Fletcher of Lenexa, Kansas; step-sisters, Sonia "Sunny" Pasquariello, and Dorthea "Dolly" Dobbs Pasquariello; and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Lupe "Lucy" Pichardo's family who Nick grew close to prior to her passing in 2014. He appreciated the friendship of Kenny Stottlemire, Wayne Barrow, and Danny Beafore who assisted him in his later years.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Susan Marie Fonte; brothers, Billy Fonte and George Fonte; step-brother, Jenia Paul "Bud" Pasquariello; and grandson, Michael Nicholas Fonte.

Friends will be received at Ross Funeral Home 801 Fairmont Avenue, Fairmont on Wednesday, April 3, 2018 from 2-8 PM with a vigil service at 7:30 PM. The Catholic Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated Thursday April 4, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, 407 Jackson Street, Fairmont with Fr. Joseph Konikattil as celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Fairmont.

Marion County Honor Guard will conduct full military honors at the cemetery.

Nick was a Super Wonderful man who could make you laugh for hours. Several of his friends went to Smoke-Hole Caverns on a fishing trip just a few years ago when he was just 92 years young. You just had to be there to appreciate the fun we all had just listening to old Nick’s jokes.
