Later, as a single mother she began working with the Virginia Travel Commission and became manager of Gunston Hall Plantation. After a short stint as director of the plantation, she retired to enjoy time in artistic and social pursuits.
A graduate of West Virginia University in Morgantown, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
She is survived by all four of her children, Ellen Stockdale of Alexandria, Grant Ellsworth Stockdale of Albuquerque, Edward Shaffer Stockdale of Albuquerque and Jane Carhart Stockdale of Alexandria; as well as two grandchildren, Andrea Lazzelle Stockdale of New Orleans and Ian Northrop Stockdale of Albuquerque.
To them she left a love for life's adventures and a positive outlook on life. All of them remember her fondly as always having a song in her heart.
