Leonard A. Sacchetti, 92, of Fairmont, passed away on Monday (Feb. 23, 2018) at his residence. He was born in Fairmont on Oct. 13, 1925, the son of the late Matteo and Mariantonia "Antonetta" Lucarelli Sacchetti.
Leonard was a graduate of Fairmont Senior High School and Coyne Electrical School and Greer College both in Chicago, Illinois. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II and served in the Second Infantry from 1944-1945 and the ERC from 1946-1949.
He retired from Consolidated Coal Company (Farmington #9 mine) as an electrician. Leonard was proud of his Italian heritage and enjoyed traveling to Italy and Argentina to visit his relatives. He was a member of UMWA-District 31- Local Union No. 9909 and the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
He is survived by his brother, John A. Sacchetti; sister Marie Carmella Sacchetti McIntosh and sister-in-law, Marion Sachetti all of Fairmont.
Also surviving are nieces and nephews Brenda and husband James Spadafore, Jimmy Jo and husband Billy Heflen, Joyce Sachetti, Matt and wife Cathy Sachetti, John Jr. and wife Denise Sacchetti; Randy and husband Steve Crowley; Michael Sacchetti, Rayanna and husband Jerry Gardner; Jim and wife Jennifer McIntosh, Anita Ruggiero, Leonard McIntosh, and Leslie McIntosh. Great-nieces and great-nephews surviving are Heather and husband Shawn Shane, Jonathan Spadafore, Lauren, Sam and Jessica Heflen, Ryan, and Collin Crowley, Jamie, Dylan and Johanna Sacchetti, Tyisa and husband Cody Steward, Shay Sachetti, Mark, and Tessa Gardner, Sam, Nicholas and Michael Ruggiero, Thomas and Anthony McIntosh, Shane, and Mara Daugherty and Greyson Stewart.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his brothers, James J. "Red" Sachetti, Mario J. Sacchetti, two sisters, Giovanina and Josephine Sacchetti, niece, Christina "Christi" McIntosh, nephew-in-law, Sam Ruggiero, sister-in-law, Helen Sacchetti and brother-in-law, Robert McIntosh.
Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. on Thursday, at Ross Funeral Home, 801 Fairmont Avenue, Fairmont. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday March 2 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Fr. Jojan Joseph CST as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Fairmont.
A vigil service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
Marion County Honor Guard will conduct full military honors at the cemetery.
