Lawrence Edward Whetsell, Sr., 86, of Big Indian Run Road, Mannington, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday (Sept. 21, 2017) at his home while peacefully asleep. He was born in Granville, West Virginia on June 3, 1931, a son of the late Victor G. and Edna (Reel) Whetsell. He married Shirley A. (Myers) on April 21, 1952.
Lawrence was a retired coal miner, having served 28 years. He loved going fishing with his son Danny and his brother Wick, loved shooting his guns with his son Tim, daughter Brenda, and his grandson Erik. He enjoyed having cookouts, spending time with his family and listening to music. He was a member of the Mannington Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Shirley Ann Myers Whetsell whom he married on April 19, 1952; six children: Danny L. (Doris) Whetsell Sr., of Mannington, Debra (Bill) Lehman of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, Timmy D. (Becky) Whetsell, Victoria I. (Walter) Metts of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, Sherry A (Denny) Gould of North Dakota, and Brenda F. (Chris) Pierce of Bridgeport; one special grandson, Danny L. Whetsell Jr.; 24 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Victor "Wick" Whetsell; three sisters, Connie Straight, Linda Warnick, and Kathleen (Pud) (Lee) Batson. In addition to his parents, Lawrence was preceded in death by a son: Lawrence "Tink" Whetsell in December of 1991; a sister: Earlene Hustead, three brothers-in-law: Denzil Hustead, Harley Warnick, and Don Straight, and two brothers who died in infancy.
Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Sunday and from 2-9 p.m. Monday at the Hutson funeral Home in Farmington where funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday with Dr. Michael P. Reese officiating. Interment will be in the IOOF Cemetery at Enterprise. www.hutsonfuneralhomes.com.
