John Richard Harris


John Richard Harris, 66, of Fairmont, passed from this life peacefully after courageously fighting a battle with cancer for over two years. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his death on July 12, 2019. He was born on August 18, 1952, in Fairmont, a son of the late Trevah Alberta and Richard Alonzo Harris, of Fairmont.

John was a 1970 graduate of East Fairmont High School. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served until 1978 as a Staff Sergeant. Throughout his career, John held many jobs in law enforcement including a Deputy Sheriff in Marion County, a security officer for Florida State University and Fairmont State College, and most recently security at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

John is survived by his wife Bonnie (Wind) Harris, of Fairmont; daughter and son-in-law Amy and Butch Thompson, of Barrackville; son and daughter-in-law John and Tammy Harris, of Fairmont; daughter and son-in-law Crystal and Steve Garrett, of Monumental; daughter and son-in-law Rebecca and Danny Neely, of Morgantown; step-children: Christine Vick, of Florida, Christopher Wind, of California, and Colleen Wind, of California; one sister and brother-in-law Sue and Donald Brunette, of Fairmont; ten grandchildren: Dakota Thompson, Josh, Hannah, Danielle, and Kameron Neely, Marissa, Caitlyn, and Ava Garrett, and Joshua and Dustin Vick; two great-grandchildren: Avery and Bryson Vick; and 3 nephews: Donald 'Chip' Brunette and wife Stacie, Chad Brunette and wife Heather, and Patrick Smith and wife Erin.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Jinny Smith.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, on Sunday from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., and Monday from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m., with services taking place at the funeral home on Monday, July 15, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Dave Meyer officiating. Interment will follow at the West Virginia National Cemetery with Full Military Honors conducted by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard and the United States Air Force.
