John Lewis Donaldson, 86, of Klondike Community, Fairview, has gone to be with the Lord on Thursday (June 1, 2017) at his home.
He was born in Fairview, on Sept. 25, 1930, a son of the late Charles Emerson Donaldson and Mary Ann Gump Donaldson.
He was a member of the Union Baptist Church. He worked as a telephone lineman until retirement in 1988. He was passionate about playing guitar and singing. He was inducted into the West Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame. He played rhythm guitar and played quite frequently at the Sagebrush Roundup in Fairmont, among other places.
John was a member of the Blacksville Senior Center. He was a graduate of Clay-Battelle High School, Class of 1949.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Hilda Cunningham Donaldson; one brother and his wife, Reverend Paul Donaldson and his wife Linda of Petersburg; five children, Mary Ellen Lake, wife of the late Kevin Lake, David Donaldson and his wife Burnice, Carla Moore and husband Jeff, Teresa Greenlee and husband Frank and Michael Donaldson and wife Mary, all of Fairmont; 13 grandchildren, Christina Moore, Alissa Donaldson, Brittany Myers, Jeff Moore, David Donaldson, Melissa Mike, Michelle Moore, Matt Moore, Sierra Greenlee, Makayla Donaldson, Frankie Greenlee, Nathaniel Greenlee and Megan Donaldson; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lenora Evelyn Donaldson, who died at birth; a son-in-law, Kevin Lake; a grandson, Christopher Moore; and a daughter, Carol Lee Donaldson.
Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. Saturday at the Owen-Neely Funeral Home, 5894 Mason-Dixon Highway, Blacksville. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 2 p.m. Sunday with the Pastor Damon Nicholson officiating. Interment will follow in the Haught Cemetery near Fairview.
