"Giovanni" John "Pop" "Papa John" Anthony Allevato, 94, of Fairmont and formerly of Nutter Fort, peacefully passed from this life in his home Sunday night (April 2, 2017).
He was born in Monongalia County, on Jan. 26, 1923, the only American-born son of the late Antonio and Caterina Tricarico Allevato.
John was a member of the Catholic church and had most recently attended the LIFE United Methodist Church.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II, of which he was very proud.
He came up through the ranks in his hospital career, having started at Fairmont General Hospital in the early 1940s. He was drafted and returned to FGH, then moved on to St. Mary's then to Union Protestant then finally to the United Hospital Center, where he retired in 1988. He was the assistant administrator due to the fact he was in charge of the five main departments. He had hired many people over the years, some of which are still working at the new UHC. He was very proud of his service to the hospital and the community.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, was a former member of the Fairmont American Legion Post 17 and played the bugle in their famous Drum and Bugle Corps. He was a former member of the Clarksburg Moose and also served on many community committees.
He also taught at Salem College as an independent contractor. He played guitar with several area bands, the last of which was the Melody Makers out of Clarksburg. He recently had been teaching himself to play the organ. He enjoyed gardening, making wine, cooking, reading, doing crypts and word puzzles as well as suduko and watching West Virginia University football and basketball.
Mr. Allevato is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Anthony J. and Doris Allevato of Clarksburg and John J. and Theresa Allevato of Fort Wayne, Indiana. He has two grandchildren, James M. and David M. Allevato; three great-grandchildren, Madison L., Jagger J. and Christian D. Allevato; one stepson, Robert B. Frey Jr; five step-grandchildren, Bryan Frey, Lisa (Ricky) Ward, Katrina (Doug) Hood, Thomas St. Clair and Jill (Brian) Garred; five step-great-grandchildren, Hannah Ward, Emily and Hayden Hood, and Ethan and Andrew Garred; also several nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and -nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 46 years, Teresa Daniels Allevato on Nov. 10, 1996, and his second wife of 14 years, Minnie Nash-Frey Allevato on Dec. 23, 2014; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph (Angeline) Allevato and Frank (Flora) Allevato; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Rose (Carmen) Urso and Mary Allevato; several nieces and nephews; and his step-daughter Charolette (Joe) St. Clair.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made in his name to the United Way in your community.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. until noon Thursday at the Frey Home For Funerals (Addition Chapel A), 320 Madison St., Fairmont. Services will be held at noon Thursday in the funeral home with the Rev. Larry Buckland officiating. Entombment will follow at the Holy Cross Mausoleum at Clarksburg with full military honors being provided by the Clarksburg Honor Guard.
