James Eldon Short II, 68, of Fairmont passed away on Monday (Feb. 26, 2018) at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He was born in Marion County on Dec. 28, 1949, a son of Virginia Kisner Short, of Fairmont, and the late James Eldon Short Sr.
Jim graduated from Fairmont Senior High School and attended Fairmont State University. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy.
He retired from the Fairmont Times West Virginian after 39 years of service as a photographer, graphics designer and production manager.
Jim was a faithful member of the First Church of the Nazarene. He was very active in his community. He most enjoyed time spent with his family and friends. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
In addition to his mother, Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Deborah (Mahaffey) Short, his sister, Judith R. Neff and her husband Samuel, of Virginia, a niece, Amy Enterline and her husband Jason, and their children, Ethan and Emily Enterline, of Martinsburg, his niece, Shannon Messenger and her husband Matt, and their children, Hannah, Hayley and Luke Messenger, of Fairmont, his nephew, Sean Eddy and his wife Jessica, and their children, Jacob, Landon and Macy Eddy, of Monongah, his nieces Rebecca Kisner and Amy Boore, his sisters-in-law, Karen Boore and her husband Rick and Dianne Graff and her husband Bruce, of Weirton.
Also surviving are his father-in-law, Roy Junior Mahaffey of Smithtown, his best friend, Dave Utt, of Fairmont and several aunts, uncles, cousins and many good friends.
In addition to his father, Jim was preceded in death by a son, Jonathan E. VanGilder, a brother-in-law, Larry Regester, a nephew, Jason Regester and his mother-in-law, Roberta (Kisner) Mahaffey.
Friends and family may call from 5-8 p.m. today and from 1-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, Fairmont. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 10-11 a.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene, 1604 Morgantown Avenue, Fairmont. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at the church with Rev. Scott King officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery, with full military honors conducted by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard.
