Herbert Dale Huey Jr. (known as H. Dale Huey Jr.), 88, of Fairmont, passed away Monday (Feb. 28, 2018) from complications of dementia.
Dale was born Sept. 25, 1929, the only child of Herbert Dale Huey and Mary Katherine Kaznoski Huey in Fairmont. He attended elementary and high school in Barrackville, where he pitched baseball and played coronet in the band. Powerboat racing on the Tygart Valley River began a love for boats and water. He later served in the United States Coast Guard from 1951 to 1954 and was stationed on the Great Lakes and in San Francisco, California.
He married Patricia Smith, whom he met on the Tygart Valley River in 1955. They were married until her death in 2010.
Returning to Fairmont after the service, he joined his father at Dale Huey Auto Service on Fairmont Avenue, which over the years sold such brands as Hudson, Rambler, Land Rover and even Chris-Craft boats. He worked at and later owned and operated the business until his retirement and sale of the business.
Dale spent his retirement as an avid fly fisherman, often traveling to the Outer Banks with friends Kipper and Rick.
Dale often reminisced about his first auto, a run-down truck that his father told him he could keep if he could get it running. The lessons learned from this were important to him for the rest of his life.
Dale is survived by his daughter Jenny of Fairmont; his son Jefry (married to Janice Bethel) of Bethesda, Maryland, and their children Jessica and Michelle.
The family will memorialize Dale's life in a private service. Arrangements are under the care of Domico Funeral Home in Fairmont. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.domicofh.com.
