Harlen Challens Frederick, 96, of Fairmont, passed away on Thursday (Aug. 17, 2017) at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg.
Harlen was born on Aug. 17, 1921, in Rivesville, a son of the late John Wesley Frederick and Lula (O'Dell) Frederick.
He graduated from Fairmont Senior High School in 1940 and served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Frederick retired from Westinghouse Electric after 35 years of service. In addition, he was owner and operator of Frederick's Lawnmower Repair and Service for 40 years before turning the business over to his family.
Mr. Frederick led a very active life. He was a member of the CCC Civilian Conservation Camp. He was a devoted member at the Covenant Church in Fairmont. He was an active member in Acacia Lodge No. 157, Crusade Community No. 61, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry 32 Degree; RAM Orient No. 9, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 34, Shriners of North America, a 50-year member of the Knights of Pythias No. 15. He was a Life member of the American Legion Post No. 40 and the VFW Post No. 629.
He is survived by his son, John Edward Frederick and his wife Janet of Fairmont; his grandchildren, Anita Berube, Angela Robe, Amy Frederick, Dr. Heather Frederick, Laura Frederick, Jeffrey Rinehart and Nicole Legg; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sister, Opal M. Sims of Fairmont
In addition to his parents, Frederick was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Frances Arlene (Colbert) Frederick; his daughter, Barbara Frederick Burch; and his brothers, Orville Frederick, Blair Frederick and Carl Frederick.
Friends and family may call from 5-8 p.m. Monday and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont. The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Josh Morgan officiating. Interment will follow at the West Virginia National Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard. Grave-side Masonic Rites will be conducted by the A.F.&A.M. Masons of Acacia Lodge No. 157.
