Gilbert's Story

Gilbert LeMasters, 95, of Colfax, was granted his angel wings Thursday (Feb. 16, 2017) at his home after a valiant battle with cancer.
He was born in Doddridge County, on Oct. 9, 1921, a son of the late Dennis and Iva Dye LeMasters.
In his younger years, he worked in several area coal mines before going to work in the shipping department of Owens-Illinois, where he stayed until it closed in 1979. He was a Christian by faith. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He enjoyed stock car racing, bowling and camping with his family.
Mr. LeMasters is survived by three children, Derral (Sandra) LeMasters of Poplar Island, Devona Ann "Bonnie" Smallwood of Colfax and Edward (Karen) LeMasters of Richmond, Virginia; 11 grandchildren, Sherry (Bob) Clay, Claudia (Harold) Toothman, Laura Willey, Lynn Macon, Sheila LeMasters, Scott LeMasters, Kimberly (Randy) Rager, Roger (Melissa) Smallwood, Keith Smallwood, Stacey Loulies and Christopher Milan; 24 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Lois LeMasters of Fairmont; and one son-in-law, Melvin Willey of Fairmont.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Louetta Bell Cain LeMasters on June 17, 1990; a daughter Patricia Ann Willey; his brother Wilbert E. LeMasters; five sisters, Leona Brenneman, Thelma Furbee, Sylvia Rutherford, Emma Smith and Iva Jean Bingamon; one son-in-law, George Smallwood; and one grandson-in-law, Sean Macon. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Friends and family may call from 1-8 p.m. Monday and 10-11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Frey Home For Funerals (Addition Chapel A), 320 Madison St., Fairmont. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with Pastor Rex Musgrove officiating. Interment will follow at the Grandview Memorial Gardens where the U.S. Army will present military honors.
