Elizabeth "Betty" A. Riggs, 82, of Fairmont, Winfield Community, passed away on Friday (Jan. 27, 2017) at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Fairmont, on Sept. 9, 1934, a daughter of the late Edwin Ashcraft and Wanda (Zinn) Taylor.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Lawrence E. Riggs, in January of 2001.
She graduated from Farmington High School. She worked at the Westinghouse Plant in Fairmont and was lastly employed at Fairmont State College in the Book Store and the Nickle.
She was a devoted member of the Winfield United Methodist Church and the Marion County CEOS. She volunteered and served on the board of directors of the Fairmont Food Pantry and volunteer at Fairmont General Hospital.
Betty was an active, giving person who loved spending time with her family, friends and neighbors. Betty touched many lives.
She is survived by three daughters, Margaret Cowger and her husband Ralph, Barbara Carpenter and her husband Darrell, and Beverly Owens all of Fairmont; four grandchildren, Scott E. Cowger and his wife Nina, Tina Cowger, David Carpenter and his wife Brittny, and Amy Owens; four very special great-grandchildren, Sadie Cowger, Austin Cowger, Brayden Cowger and Drew Carpenter.
Also surviving is her sister, Sally Campbell of North Carolina; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Ashcraft of North Carolina, Dorothy Maio of Fairmont and Ida Jean Jones of Fairmont; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by three brothers, Sonny Ashcraft, Hershel Ashcraft and Richard Ashcraft.
Friends and family may call from 5-8 p.m. today, 1-8 p.m. Monday and 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Carpenter & Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Reverend Tom Shepherd officiating. Interment services will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery.
