David's Story

David A. Merrill, Sr., 78, of Fairmont, passed from this life Wednesday, (Aug. 16, 2017) at the VA Pittsburgh Health Care Systems after a valiant battle with cancer.
He was born in Fairmont on Nov. 30, 1938, a son of the late Austin Merrill, Jr. and Sylvia Morris Merrill.
Dave served as a fireman apprentice in the U.S. Navy and a machinist mate in the reserves. He had worked as a coal miner for several years, during which time he was a foreman at the Rachel mine. He was involved in the Boy Scouts of America, worked for the Don Miller Sign Company and has had a saw sharpening business. He was a hard worker and had become proficient in electricity, masonry and carpentry. He has helped put new roofs on many homes in the Fairmont area, and enjoyed working with his sons. He enjoyed drawing and painting, reading and watching Western movies (especially ones with John Wayne).
Mr. Merrill is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Doris Ash Merrill; 10 children Cindy (Sherry) Farabee of Heath, Ohio, Dennis (Lisa) Merrill of Hickory, North Carolina, Debra (Billy) Keener of Rivesville, David Merrill, Jr., Michael Merrill and Robert Merrill all of Fairmont, Robin Merrill of New Martinsville, James Merrill of Preston County, Frank Merrill of Fairmont and John (Char) Merrill of Shinnston; niece, Denise Swaggart; nephew, Bobby Cutright, Jr.; stepchildren Tammy Foley of Fairview, Dennis Cochran of Shinnston, Tina Ayersman of Barrackville and Michelle Faulkner of Fairmont; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis A. Merrill; his sister, Joyce Cutright; brother-in-law, Bobby Cutright, Sr.; and a granddaughter, Erin Keener.
David's family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the funeral home and sent to P.O. Box 895, Fairmont, WV 26555.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Frey Home For Funerals (Historic Chapel), 320 Madison St. His service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Interment will follow at the West Virginia National cemetery with full military honors being presented by the Marion County Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy.
